It’s here. Fall has arrived, and with it comes cooler air providing relief from those record-breaking temperatures that gripped so much of the country this past summer. It doesn’t take more than a few cool nights in a row to remind us that one of the things we love about this season is burning candles. This fall we can set the perfect mood by choosing the right aroma.

Before we consider color or sound let’s talk about aroma. The scents we smell around us have a profound effect on what we feel. Depending on the scent you choose, candles can change your mood. You may find yourself feeling energized, romantic, motivated, relaxed or a number of other states.

When choosing candles to burn during this season consider what fall means to you. For some of us, we have never lost the energy we felt about fall as children. There’s a change in the air from the final stagnant hot days of summer to a crisp alive sensation. Halloween is on it’s way and there is a palpable excitement in the air. If this sounds like you, you can enhance that mood by choosing spice-scented candles. Some spicy candle “flavors” include cinnamon chai, ginger bread and spiced plum.

For others, fall is about warmth; sharing time with friends and family; and eating good food. If this is your idea of a perfect fall you can choose candles that warm these crisp fall days. Luckily, these days there’s no shortage of yummy food scented candles. What comes immediately to mind in this category is vanilla bean, rum raisin, caramel, and of course pumpkin butter.

Perhaps you are looking for neither the excitement of fall nor the warmth, but rather you are like many who find fall a time of deep reflection. This comes as no surprise and may even have deep ancestral roots. Traditionally fall is a time for harvest and setting in stores for the winter. Though the world of spring planting, summer care and fall harvest are distant to many of us it is impossible to shake those natural rhythms, but then again who wants to. There is something comforting in that state of being so why not encourage it. If when you’re ready to sit back and reflect this fall, you want to set an air of clarity consider scents like apple wood, juniper, or fireside. If, on the other hand, you want to reflect with smoother and mellower scents consider coffee scented candles like amaretto latte, and in another room light a biscotti scented candle.

Whether you are the excited type, the warm, family friendly type or the reflective type, this fall you can further accentuate the mood you’re creating by adding the sound of a crackling fire. Don’t have a fireplace? With WoodWick Candles, that’s no longer a problem. If you have never lit, or even heard of a WoodWick Candle you probably will soon. The beauty of these candles is that they have an organic wooden wick that sounds like the popping crackle of a fire. So, go ahead - light a candle, and create your perfect fall day.

The Three Dimensions of Burning Candles for Ambiance

Posted in Articles at 8:40 am by press

If you aren’t already keenly aware of the fact that burning candles can shape mood, you’ll love reading what we have to say here. And, if you are already aware of the most common first two dimensions - get ready for a surprise because there’s a new candle on the market that ads a third and important mood enhancer.

Perhaps the first dimension that people are aware of when they choose a candle to burn is the color of the candle. Even an unlit candle can add or detract from mood with its color. For that perfect soft romantic mood stick with simple and elegant. Try the colors of silver, gold, red, pink, and/or white. Want to jazz up your evening, choose bright colors reds, yellows, and purples will help you do this. Cool colors like blues and greens can be perfect on a hot summer evening. Place a floating blue candle in a bowl of round ice and watch the response you get.

Once a candle is lit scent is the second dimension that most of us are aware of when burning a candle. For a casual dinner party look for candles that smell like food! Go for apple pie, pumpkin, cherries, cinnamon, and strawberries. These scents are fun and keeps people’s mouths watering. For a romantic evening, fragrances should be clean and simple such as roses, vanilla, and other non-heavy scents. To soothe the soul after a long day consider chamomile, vanilla, or blueberry they are all wonderful placed along the edge of the bath during a hot soak.

Most people, even if they have never given concentrated effort to mood setting with candles are at least aware that colors and scents are two important dimension of candle burning. Now think of a third dimension of candle burning to add ambiance, what else could there possibly be? What about sound, yep you hear that right sound. Until recently, this wasn’t much of an issue unless you wanted one of those hokey singing plastic candles, there was nothing on the market worth considering. Recently though, The Old Virginia Candle Company has brought the sound of a crackling fire to a line of candles called WoodWick Candles adding a third dimension to the ambiance of candle burning. These delightful candles have an organic wood wick. Contained in shapely jars with rich aromas in both vibrant and soothing colors these candles offer three full dimensions to mood setting.
